Dialects of Belarusian

    Belarusian exists along a dialect continuum.  Using data from the Dialect Atlas of the Belarusian Language, the boundaries of Belarusian dialects can be visualized. 

    I digitized the maps from the Dyjaliektalahicny Atlas Bielaruskaj Movy. The digitized values from these maps can be found in this spreadsheet file.

    One can segment the dialect continuum into an arbitrary number of dialects. Here is a KMZ file showing the dialect that each village falls within.

    These presentation slides describe how the dialect boundaries and characteristics were derived from the data.
    If Belarusian were to be divided between five dialects, then they would be described by the chart below.
